I’ll be covering the top resorts Costa Rica has to offer, with the main focus on those that have been vetted by thousands of prior travelers, including myself. Allow me to be your guide, as we overview several of the best high-quality resorts, with extensive amenities and an array of price points.

1. Nayara Gardens- La Fortuna

Located just 10 minutes outside the town of La Fortuna in the Northern Highlands, Nayara Gardens is surrounded by lush rainforest and in fact, they possess plenty of walking trails on the premises for you to take in the sounds of nature and birdwatch, and maybe even spot a monkey or sloth. Soak in the resort’s mineral hot springs, encompassed by the rainforest, sourced directly from the adjacent volcano. The resort’s outdoor terrace showcases phenomenal views of Arenal Volcano. Looking to unwind? Swing by their spa for a massage and scrubs or wraps made from volcanic mud and organic coffee or participate in a yoga class.

Enjoy Complimentary breakfast in the mornings, and throughout the day when you need an energy boost, stop on by Mi Cafecito for an espresso. For lunch and dinner, La Terraza Del Arenal is a lovely open-air restaurant from which you can gaze at the volcano and enjoy the Latin-inspired cuisine or for a more unique dining experience with an Asian flare, check out Asia Luna. As a bonus, all of the produce and meats served here are locally sourced.

When it comes to the accommodations, even the entry level Casitas feature the star of the show, Arenal Volcano vistas, which you can enjoy from your very own oversized jacuzzi positioned on your balcony or hammock. If you prefer an even more luxurious stay, upgrade to the Rainforest Pool Villa, which features a private Infinity plunge pool on a wraparound porch with serene rainforest or Volcano views, and even an outdoor shower.

Nayara

Allow the resort’s in-house naturalists to guide you through an array of tours including a night frog scouting tour where you can meet the red-eyed tree frogs and blue jean frogs. The resort is positioned 20-30 minutes from many local attractions including the majestic La Fortuna Waterfall and Arenal Volcano National Park. Zip line across the rainforest canopy, rappel down waterfalls or get your rush from white water rafting down the Sarapiqui River through the many available tour options. Mistico Hanging Bridges park is also a must see!

2. Parador Resort and Spa- Manuel Antonio

Surrounded by 12 acres of tropical rainforest, Parador Resort and Spa is an eco-luxury resort located in Manuel Antonio, which is on the southwestern coast of Costa Rica.  The top-rated resort boasts sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean especially from the Premium rooms, Suites and of course the Master Vista, which can be appreciated from your very own balcony jacuzzi tub. Basic rooms also come complete with a terrace or balcony, while some of the suites offer more luxurious living space and fully equipped kitchens.

For the more socially inclined, there are two pools which are more family oriented, with a swim up bar. If you are on a couples retreat or honeymoon, the Ocean Vista infinity pool and jacuzzi are perfect and complete with a cascading waterfall. Dine at La Galeria Restaurant, enjoying the view of Parador’s gardens or sip on a cocktail at one of its two bars.

If encounters with wildlife such as sloths, monkeys and toucans interest you, Parador has you positioned right in the center of the action. If you are lucky, a white-faced monkey may even pay you a visit directly on your balcony. Located a short distance away, is one of the most popular attractions, Manuel Antonio National Park. Biesanz beach, great for more secluded swimming is a brief 7-minute hike and Espadilla Norte beach can easily be accessed by the hotel shuttle and is bustling with watersports.

3. Arenal Springs Resort and Spa- La Fortuna

Similar to the aforementioned resort, Arenal Springs is also located in La Fortuna, showcasing the beautiful Arenal Volcano directly from one of 4 volcano heated natural hot springs that guests are privileged to enjoy. The water temperatures range from 94-104 degrees Fahrenheit, filled with calcium, magnesium, chloride and sodium bicarbonate minerals that will pamper your skin and leave you sleeping like a baby. Enjoy a vigorous hydro-massage under one of the waterfalls and then swim on over to the natural stone pool bar stools for a libation. Oh, and let’s not forget about the 3 fresh water pools if you prefer to cool off.

Guests are provided with a complimentary extensive breakfast buffet with a fusion of American and typical Costa Rican foods. Chow down on lunch and dinner at one of the three restaurants, Ti-Cain, Sakana Sushi and a Italian restaurant where you can dine on authentic Italian pizza. Take advantage of the endless list of wines and cocktails at Ti-Cain, which is the main open-air restaurant, complete with live music entertainment on the weekends.

Whether you choose the junior or master suite, each room is designed with high ceilings, granite countertops, a large smart tv, fully stocked minibar, beautiful woodwork and of course the most important feature of all, the volcanic vista. This resort has even hosted the “The Bachelor” amongst other famous tv shows.

You’ll never go hungry with five excellent dining experiences to choose from. Try out Tree Tops Grill when you work up an appetite by the poolside, sip on a mojito at the La Laguna swim up bar while relaxing in the infinity pool marveling at the Volcano, or enjoy a more sophisticated dinner at the Las Ventanas Restaurant, featuring beautiful panoramic vistas through their floor to ceiling windows.

The luxurious rooms are spacious with vaulted ceilings, equipped with a terrace or balcony, gorgeous marble bathrooms, each with jacuzzi tubs, and of course hammocks and rocking chairs to rest your legs after a long day of activities while taking in the views. When looking to escape from your room, rejuvenate at their full-service Sanctuary Spa or take a dip in the natural hot springs.

Last but not least, the property comes loaded with plenty of activities. Get your adrenaline pumping with river tubing, kayaking, rock climbing, a waterslide and more at the resort’s Club Rio Adventure Center. It’s safe to say The Springs Resort comes packed with a plethora of fun and relaxation, whether you are traveling as a couple or a family!

5. Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo- Peninsula Papagayo

Searching for the ultimate upscale experience? The Four Seasons brand is well known for catering to the travelers who prefer extravagant living and pampering! Previous guests have raved about the 5-star treatment from staff for years. This particular Four Seasons resort is nestled between two beaches on an isthmus in Northwestern Guanacaste, giving way to breathtaking panoramic views.

Recently renovated in 2017, the rainforest inspired contemporary rooms contain massive windows allowing guests to take in those ocean views and soak up the sunlight from indoors. The residences and villas contain fully equipped kitchens, bright living spaces and private infinity pools with the stunning ocean directly in front.

From outside adventures to in-house activities, there are plenty of activities to keep guests entertained, Sit back and take in the brilliant sunset while letting your taste buds dance away on exports of chocolate, rum and coffee. Indulge in a tranquil yoga session or spa treatment. Watch movies with your family at the “dive in” theatre in the pool, or play a round on the 18-hole, par-72 course. Should you chose to be more adventurous, the resort can arrange for you to participate in excursions such as ziplining and high-rope obstacles, surf lessons, scuba diving with coral planting, and sailing on a catamaran or fishing boat to name a few. Additionally, it is about a 2-hour drive to Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park and La Chorerra Waterfall.

6. The Peace Lodge- Vara Blanca, Alajuela

The Peace lodge is a five-star resort located about an hour north of the Juan Santamaria International Airport in the capital San Jose, situated on the 70-acre property of the gorgeous La Paz Waterfall Nature Park. It’s been rated number one resort in its area by TripAdvisor for many years and you may recognize it from the Travel Channel show Trista and Ryan’s Honeymoon Hotspots International. As a guest here, you will have special access to waterfalls, hiking trails, animal exhibits and trout lake prior to and after the park closes to outside visitors. This resort is the entire package deal containing all the fantastic views and activities to keep you entertained for days.

From the balconies of your rooms, you will relish the magical views of the La Paz River Valley and Poas Volcano, all from an altitude where cloud and rainforests mesh together. Each of the 18 rooms’ decor are inspired by the rainforest and contain a cozy rustic natural river stone fireplace, a mosaic stone jacuzzi tub, and a waterfall shower. Further enjoy the privacy of your own spa by ordering an in-room massage.

When you are ready to wander off from your room and explore the surroundings, there are various wildlife such as sloths, monkeys, hummingbirds, and frogs to watch for on the multiple hiking trails of the park and you can also enjoy the elegant butterflies at the Butterfly Observatory. It is highly recommended that you book a tour in order to see those discrete species hiding out in the trees and plants throughout the rainforest. Don’t forget to say hello to the friendly jungle cats at the animal observatory. Visit all five of the stunning waterfalls, with La Paz being the largest and most photographed. In addition to taking a Poas Volcano and Doka Coffee Plantation tour, you can also enjoy river rafting and horseback riding. When exhausted from all of the day’s adventures, take a dip in the pristine pool and enjoy a tasty meal at the lodge restaurant next to a large tree decorated with lights.

7. Rio Celeste Hideaway- Alajuela

Rio Celeste Hideaway is one kilometer southeast of the Tenorio Volcano National Park, featuring the breathtaking aqua blue waterfall of Rio Celeste and about a 90-minute drive from the Liberia International airport. Upon arrival to the hotel, you’ll be welcomed with a tropical drink and cool face towel. Amongst other amenities, the Hideaway has a massive crystal-clear pool, featuring a swim up bar and three jacuzzis. Next you can unwind at the spa with a hot stone massage or a mud wrap. If you are feeling more energetic, strap up your shoes and head on over the gym featuring panoramic jungle views.

Indulge in a unique open-air dining experience at Kantala Restaurant with views of the rainforest or Koi fish swimming in the adjacent ponds. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. If you are looking to order some cocktails outside of the pool, check out the more upscale Cantina Delirio.

Immerse yourself in nature in your own private outdoor shower featured in each of the individual Casita accommodations, surrounded by lush rainforest and peaceful sounds of wildlife. Whether you choose to book a garden or forest view, you will enjoy it directly from your balcony. Each spacious room is also equipped with pillow top beds, mini fridge, Wi-Fi, air conditioning and room service.

Around 6 PM in the evening, you can venture out on a guided twilight tour to observe multiple creatures that come out in the later hours. There are various tour options and activities nearby to partake in as well. First and foremost, the Rio Celeste Waterfall and Tenorio Volcano National Park as mentioned above are a couple of options. For the adrenaline junkie at heart, engage in some white water rafting or tubing down the Class 1 or 2 rivers. Take a hiking tour over hanging bridges boasting beautiful rainforest views at Heliconia Hanging bridges park, taking in the biodiversity. There are also plenty of other activities such as horseback riding, cultural and chocolate tours to learn more about the Pura Vida lifestyle.

8. Arenas Del Mar- Manuel Antonio

Stationed directly beachfront just minutes from Manuel Antonio National Park on the southwestern coast, ocean lovers can frolic and relax with stellar views! This 11-acre property is the only luxury resort in Manuel Antonio that is truly located on the beach. While enjoying Playitas beach, guests are provided with lounge chairs, hammocks, and towels. They even offer surfboard rentals and lessons upon request. The resort is in close proximity to Biesanz and Espadilla beaches. Espadilla beach specifically is known for the various action-packed water sports such as parasailing, jet skiing and surfing. If you prefer a more laid-back beach, the north end of Espadilla is for you.

Stay in an Ocean Breeze Suite and enjoy those ocean front vistas from your private balcony hot tub or upgrade to the Ocean View Superior room for breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean in a luxurious spacious living arrangement. All 38 rooms are loaded with premium bedding, a minibar, tv, high speed internet and AC. One of the potential best bonuses, is a random visit from a playful monkey right on your balcony. Additionally, complimentary breakfast is part of the package. Two days a week, Arenas Del Mar offers complimentary yoga and exercise classes.

If you don’t feel like swimming in the ocean, soak up some sun by one of the two pools, or treat yourself to a massage at the spa. There are two onsite restaurants, El Mirador and Playitas to feed your appetites while taking in the picturesque views from the private beach. Receive service on your beach lounge chair from Playitas so you don’t have to lift a finger. There are plenty of surrounding restaurants such as El Avion, built around a historical Fairchild C-123 plane or La Cantina BBQ.

It would be criminal to miss out on the most popular attraction, Manuel Antonio National Park, which is within walking distance from the resort. Surround yourself with wildlife, some of which may come very close to you while visiting the park. Given that some wildlife can be challenging to spot to the untrained eye, the resort provides naturalists to guide and help you spot those creatures. Take a tour to the Nauyaca Waterfalls, about an hour away, or enjoy ziplining, and ATV tours.

9. Rio Perdido- Bagaces

Located in the lowlands of San Bernardo, east of Liberia and on the northwestern region of the country in the Guanacaste province, this resort is surrounded by biodiverse dwarf forests and canyons. The tranquil environment has just as much to offer nature lovers as it does adrenaline addicts, and the entire resort is designed around passive wellness. On the property you will find about 30 miles of beautiful hiking and biking trails, as well as a crystal clear thermal mineral river and natural warm mineral pools for forest bathing. With a mile of natural pools within the river, you can easily find a private spot for soaking your bones.

The sleeping quarters are arranged in private bungalows, all interconnected to the hiking trails on the property. Each room offers a beautiful terrace to take in the sights and sounds of nature. The rooms are accented with fine singed wood on the walls made by an ancient Japanese burning technique, and black concrete panel flooring for a clean, contemporary style, with large sweeping floor to ceiling windows. Some of the bungalows even have a large pull-down projector screen, complete with soundbar and subwoofer, as well as twin private outdoor showers.

Complimentary breakfast is included, and the resort features a large open-air restaurant with panoramic views of the rainforest. The restaurant prides themselves on sourcing all of their ingredients locally. Sip on libations at the swim up bar or relax in any of the three other pools. Enjoy a session of cliff side yoga or opt for a massage at the spa.

Zipline over Rio Blanco Canyon on the resorts very own course, uniquely designed with carbon fiber cables, featuring not only ziplines, but a 50-foot Tarzan swing and a challenge bridge. While hiking on the properties many trails, you will traverse through dwarf forests and will be able to view 3 volcanos. Alternatively, you can take in the scenes while mountain biking. Get your thrills water tubing through the narrow rock walls of Rio Perdido, which can be quite advanced in speed especially during rainy season.

10. Paradise Hot Springs- La Fortuna


Last, but not least, this resort was personally one of my all-time favorite resorts that I’ve personally tested the waters in, and I mean quite literally. Located in La Fortuna, Paradise Hot Springs boasts an impressive 7 various geothermal mineral pools directly sourced from the adjacent majestic Arenal volcano. Several of these pools are smaller and private, exuding romantic vibes. The pools are especially gorgeous at night time with multi-colored uplighting and several cascading waterfalls. And of course, there is a swim up bar to grab that pina colada when your thirst strikes. Impressively, every morning you can witness staff fully draining and cleaning the pools, which is ensures the high standard of purity.

The complimentary breakfast contains a perfect spread of typical Costa Rican and American breakfast foods. Azalia restaurant offers an open-air dining experience, serving delicious cuisine with buffet and a la carte style. The wait staff were even so kind to pack us a breakfast the night prior to the mornings we left extremely early for activities. And let’s not forget about the hidden private bar on the rooftop with picturesque views of the volcano, which is very close in proximity, with animals frequently grazing in the foreground.

The accommodations are clean, colonial style, with rainforest inspired art, with a lovely walk out balcony or terrace viewing the volcano or garden. Every morning on the porch, we were welcomed by the sounds of the trickling springs and birds chirping. The bathrooms are sophisticated, with floor to ceiling tiles, large rain head showers, some of which also contain large soaking tubs. The frosted tile windows allow beautiful natural light in. Each guest also has access to their own private assistant.

While not soaking in the springs, there are many activities to engage in off the property. Just a few minutes drive from the resort, swim in the magical La Fortuna Waterfall, hike in Arenal Volcano National Park or explore the suspense bridges of Mistico Hanging Bridges with spectacular views of the rainforest below. Or if you are feeling up to a longer drive, venture to Rio Celeste to marvel at the gorgeous aqua blue waterfall. There are plenty of other excursions nearby including canyoning, waterfall rappelling, ziplining, white water rafting and ATV riding to name a few.
